Old Volcano & Stations of the Cross

Climb past life-size statues of the Stations of the Cross up the slope of Mount Vulcan

The “Old Volcano” is Mount Vulcan, the cone near Catarman that rose during the eruptions of 1871 and buried the old town. Today a paved and stepped path climbs its flank past fourteen life-size sculptures depicting the Stations of the Cross, the devotional route that recalls Christ’s Passion.

The walkway starts beside the coast road in Bonbon, a few minutes from the Sunken Cemetery. It is a steady climb of perhaps an hour each way at an easy pace, with sea views opening up as you rise, and it becomes a pilgrimage route during Holy Week.
